Straight teeth, which are properly aligned, decrease the risk of dental problems. If you have straight teeth, you can prevent plaque buildup, chew easily and speak better. A misaligned bite causes muscle tension, pain and wears down the teeth. Crooked teeth are also difficult to clean and are susceptible to cavities and gum diseases.
Orthodontics or Orthodontia treats malocclusion by correcting the misalignment of bite and improves spacing between teeth. Dr. Joe Lee will recommend an orthodontic treatment depending on the amount of bad bite and misalignment.
Available Treatments at Mountain View:
Fixed braces are used to correct the position of multiple teeth. They have wires that pass through metal brackets and are attached to bands. These tightly fastened wires apply force on the teeth and gently move them to their accurate place. They are serviced monthly to achieve the desired result. Ceramic braces are also available to preserve the aesthetics of the mouth.
Invisalign is an alternative to the conventional metal braces. They are custom-made invisible trays that apply tension on the teeth and gradually shift them to the correct position. They can be removed while eating, brushing and flossing.
A headgear fits around the head and decreases the growth of the upper jaw. It draws the front teeth back and keeps the back teeth in their original position. You need to wear a headgear for a few hours while sleeping or during evenings.
After removing the braces, while the gums and bones adapt to the new position, retainers are used to keep the straightened teeth in place.
Retainers can either be fixed or removable.
Braces or aligners can't fix overly crowded teeth. In such cases, there isn't enough space and some teeth need to be pulled out.
Orthognathic surgery treats major spacing and misalignment problems.
